The careers of Barcelona legends Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba will come to an end at the conclusion of the Major League Soccer playoffs in which they hope to help lead Inter Miami to the MLS Cup title, and their longtime superstar teammate will miss them dearly.
Lionel Messi spoke with Fabrizio Romano ahead of the MLS Playoffs, and the GOAT was asked about the retirement announcements from Busquets and Alba which came very close to each other a few weeks ago. Messi admitted he thinks about his own football mortality when two such close friends are ready to hang up their boots, and will cherish the last moments he’ll get to share with two of his football soulmates.
“Honestly, it’s tough. First, because you realize you’ve devoted your whole professional life to football, you see people around you starting to leave, and you understand that your own time will come soon.
“We were always in harmony on and off the field and shared a lot, even with our families. So it’s a loss of friends, both on and off the field. And of course, these are also difficult moments for them, because leaving behind something you love is never easy.”
